The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for thunderstorms covering large parts of the UK, including Merseyside, set to take effect from midnight tonight until 10am on Friday. This alert follows recent red and amber extreme heat warnings.
Warning Details and Timing
The warning begins at midnight on Thursday and lasts for 10 hours, with thunderstorms expected to develop overnight and persist into Friday morning. The Met Office advised that while many areas will escape the worst, some locations could face disruption.
According to the Met Office: "Many areas missing the worst, but thunderstorms could bring disruption in places during Thursday night and into Friday morning."
Potential Impacts
The forecaster warned of possible power cuts, as well as delays and cancellations to public transport services. Gusty winds of 50 to 60 mph are possible, particularly in the south and west of the warning area, along with frequent lightning, hail, and heavy rain (15-20 mm in an hour).
A Met Office statement added: "Thunderstorms are expected to move northeastwards across parts of England and Wales during the early hours of Friday, clearing during Friday morning."

The yellow warning covers a broad swath of the UK, including the North West (Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester), East Midlands, London & South East England, North East England, South West England, Wales, West Midlands, and Yorkshire & Humber. Specific areas include Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Cardiff, Bristol, and Birmingham.
