Met Office forecasts rain for 72 UK areas this weekend

The Met Office has forecast that the UK will see some much-needed rain across several areas this weekend.

According to weather maps produced by the forecaster, 72 areas will experience rain on Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17.

The downpours will be welcomed by those in England and Wales, as 71.3% of England is now in drought.

Saturday's Rain in the South

Areas in the south will see rain on Saturday morning, with Cambridge and Southampton seeing showers from around 10am. As the morning continues, showers will continue traveling across the south with Luton and Stevenage seeing downpours before midday.

Areas in the Midlands can also expect some showers throughout the day, with Nottingham and Worksop seeing slight rainfall.

The precipitation on Saturday remains largely confined to the south before moving farther north for the rest of the weekend.

Sunday's Rain Spreads North

In the afternoon, the surrounding areas of London can expect drizzle around 2pm, with chances of further rainfall throughout the evening. The rain will continue at 1am on Sunday in parts of southern England, with Colchester and Chelmsford expected to see showers.

Despite this, the majority of the south is expected to remain dry throughout the weekend.

In Scotland, however, many areas will see spells of drizzle and downpours throughout the weekend, spreading from concentrated precipitation in the Highlands and shifting to more scattered rain in Glasgow.

Heavier Rain in the North

As the early-morning rain continues, Southend-on-Sea and Rochester are forecast to have bouts of rain around 4am, before clearing as the morning progresses.

By Sunday afternoon, many areas in Scotland will have seen periods of rain, with Aberdeen and Cumnock forecast downpours at 1pm.

As the afternoon continues, the north of England will see heavier rain, with Newcastle Upon Tyne, Middlesbrough and Sunderland covered in blue shadows on the weather maps at 4pm.

According to the forecaster, the North East is expected to have "a band of rain then likely to move in during Monday".

In the evening, the rain strikes in more regions in Scotland, with Edinburgh likely to see showers at 10pm.

Rain Continues into Next Week

The Met Office forecast says: "Sunday is mostly dry with sunshine, though rain reaching the northwest later. Monday sees increasing rain, with breezy conditions."

Rainy conditions are anticipated to continue into next week.

The longer range forecast adds: "Into the start of next week frontal systems will likely approach or move across the UK from the Atlantic. These will bring bring rain to many parts of the UK, although any heavy rain will probably be across high ground in the northwest."
