Met Office fog warning: motorists urged to stay alert

The Met Office has issued a yellow severe weather warning for fog affecting Lincolnshire, the East Midlands, the Home Counties and parts of Greater London, with visibility expected to drop below 100 metres in places.

Hazardous driving conditions

Forecasters have warned that thick fog is making driving in some areas particularly hazardous, with the most extensive and disruptive conditions expected during the morning rush hour. The warning is in place until 10am, but delays to bus, train and some flight services could continue into the afternoon.

The fog is expected to slowly thin, lift and clear later this morning, although in some rural spots in eastern England it may not clear until the afternoon.

Fog expected to return for Halloween

Meteorologist Honor Criswick said: “The foggy picture is set to continue as we creep our way closer towards Halloween.” She added that eastern areas of Wales, Lincolnshire and northeast England could see fog on Friday, with more widespread fog returning across eastern England later in the evening.

Ms Criswick said it will be a “chilly, gloomy” start to Saturday before some sunny spells across England and Wales, with cloudy and breezy conditions in the northwest.

Travel advice

The Met Office advised: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, leaving extra journey time, or amending plans if necessary. Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights, and check they are working before setting off on your journey. Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel, may also be affected; check for updates from your travel company, and follow their advice.”
