The Met Office has warned that heavy rain could affect parts of southern and central UK on Sunday morning, with 24 counties in England and Wales potentially impacted. Despite a slight rise in temperatures this weekend, reaching 25C today, more wet weather is forecast.
Heavy rain expected overnight into Sunday
In the Met Office's morning video forecast, meteorologist Alex Deakin explained that heavy spells of rain could move across southern and central parts of the UK in the early hours of Sunday. “We could see some further heavier pulses coming in, particularly across parts of Wales, then into the Midlands and across southern England, as we go through the night [into Sunday morning],” he said.
Deakin added that the rain would bring a milder night across the south compared to the previous one, but a wetter start for those up early on Sunday. The heavy rain is expected to clear during the day, with most areas bright and dry by the afternoon.
Counties at risk and Sunday outlook
The Met Office maps indicate 24 counties could face heavy rain on Sunday morning, all in England or Wales. The list includes Cardiganshire, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Brecknockshire, Glamorgan, and Monmouthshire in Wales, and Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Surrey, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Somerset, and Hampshire in England.
Deakin noted uncertainty about the timing of the rain clearing, but said heavier pulses should clear through, with southernmost counties of England likely to stay drab with rain and drizzle. Elsewhere, a brighter day is expected with good spells of sunshine, especially in north-east England, and lighter winds.
Temperature forecast and BBC outlook
The Met Office predicts afternoon highs of 22C in the south-east and western England on Sunday, 21C in the Midlands and south coast, 18C in Edinburgh, and 17C in Northern Ireland. BBC Weather also suggests some wet spells on Sunday afternoon, with lingering rain in the morning and possible sunny breaks later, though spots of rain cannot be ruled out.
Monday is expected to be mostly dry, with BBC Weather forecasting a breezy and cloudy day with a chance of a spot of rain, but mostly dry with late sunshine. Tuesday may bring a few light showers in the morning, turning mostly sunny and dry with patchy cloud.
