A popular sports fanzone in Manchester has been forced to make a major change to its screenings due to the extreme hot weather this week. First Street, outside HOME, is showing a series of top sports events throughout the summer on its big screen within Tony Wilson Place, including The International T20 Cricket, the Fencing European Championship, and Major League Baseball (MLB).
Extreme Heat Forces Schedule Shifts
In the last week, the set-up has shown the MLB Milwaukee Brewers vs Cleveland Guardians game, the Women’s Cycling World Tour, Queens Tennis, and the Climbing World Series. It joins a bustling live sports schedule corner of Manchester, with fellow First Street venues Gasworks, House of Social, Bunny Jackson’s, Junkyard Golf and 9inetySix all screening the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the same time.
However, due to the extreme weather over the next few days, bosses have now announced that they have had to make a series of major changes to their scheduled screenings. Greater Manchester is expected to see temperatures well into the 30s this week, with highs of 36°C forecast by the Met Office.
Screen Off Until 4:30pm
Posting on Instagram, organisers said: “It’s officially too hot to handle. This week, due to the extreme heat, we’re giving our screen in Tony Wilson Place a well-earned break. The screen will be turned off in the daytime to prevent overheating. Our live stream will be back up and running from 4:30pm, when you can drop by to enjoy all our sporting action after work! Stay cool, stay hydrated, and we’ll see you later.”
This change means that the First Street outdoor space will no longer be screening the intended International T20 Cricket highlights on Wednesday and Thursday morning (June 24 and 25) and the Moto GP Netherlands Grand Prix on Friday and Saturday (June 26 and 27).
Affected Events and Rescheduled Times
Other impacted screenings include the daily morning coverage of the Eastbourne Tennis, which was initially due to begin at 11am. Screenings of the event will now start from 4.30pm and run until 8pm. The Men's and Women's National Road Championship Cycling on Sunday (June 28) will now also begin at 4.30pm instead of 8.30pm. Its daily coverage continues until around 11pm, with upcoming evening screenings of the Test Cricket and the AFL matches between the North Melbourne Kangaroos vs Essendon Bombers and the Fremantle Dockers vs Gold Coast Suns on Sunday currently unaffected.
