British travellers have been warned of 'life-threatening' flooding as storm Nolo grows into a hurricane in Hawaii. The popular tourist destination, famous worldwide for its stunning beaches, has braced for potentially catastrophic flooding.
Hurricane status and rainfall warnings
Nolo became a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean on Thursday and was expected to strengthen while turning towards Hawaii's Big Island, the National Hurricane Centre said. Forecasters warned that the Big Island could see rainfall totals of 15 to 20 inches, with higher amounts possible through Saturday.
The National Hurricane Center say there could be 'maximum amounts of 35 inches'. The island of Maui also could be hit with life-threatening floods, the hurricane centre said. It added some areas of Hawaii will likely start experiencing hurricane conditions by Friday night.
UK government travel advice
The UK government website warns that Atlantic hurricane season normally runs from June to November, with The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) outlook predicting an "above-normal hurricane season in the central Pacific basin", including the waters around Hawaii in 2026. The government website warns holidaymakers that hurricane conditions may impact flights.
The website states: "Travellers to the USA during hurricane season should check the websites of local, State and Federal agencies (such as NOAA and the US National Hurricane Center) for the latest forecasts and conditions. You should also be aware of the possibility of disruption to flights and other transport services."
Urgent preparation advice
The National Hurricane Center warn people to make preparations 'now' as "heavy rain increases in both coverage and intensity today and Friday."
