Ferry View, a popular seaside cafe and bar in South Shields, closed early on Thursday as temperatures reached 30°C in parts of the North East. The owners announced the decision shortly after 1pm, saying they wanted to 'look after their team' during the hottest part of the day.
Heatwave conditions
Temperatures were already above 20°C by 8am, and by early afternoon the dial had hit 30 in some areas, including South Shields. Some parts of the region were set to be hotter than Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
The last few months have felt positively Mediterranean, with prolonged spells of sunshine and sweltering temperatures. Earlier events like Radio 1's Big Weekend in Sunderland and The Hoppings also enjoyed fantastic weather.
Closure announcement
Taking to Instagram, the owners posted: 'With the temperatures continuing to rise, for the wellbeing of our team we’ve made the decision to close the venue at 3pm today, during the hottest part of the day. We want to get the balance right between being here for our customers while also looking after the team working in the heat.'
They added: 'We really appreciate your understanding and continued support. Stay cool & we’ll see you tomorrow!'
Upcoming collaboration
This week, Ferry View announced a collaboration with South Shields sweet shop Mr Swainston's, which will see the Emporium's favourite sweets turned into drinks. The news arrived ahead of Mr Swainston's owners John and Sean appearing on Dragon's Den next week.
