The advice covers tyres, lights, brakes, windscreen and wipers, and fluid levels, with drivers told to 'check' their car is road safe 'any time you're going on a journey.'
Essential checks before you drive
According to GOV.UK, drivers should carry out checks every time they use the car, including ensuring the windscreen, windows, and mirrors are clean, confirming all lights are working properly, and making sure the brakes work. Other important checks include the engine oil, battery, and tyres. Drivers can find the correct information for their vehicle in their handbook, which details when these need to be completed.
RAC advice for road trips
Drivers planning road trips can also find advice on the RAC website. The experts detail the necessary car checks that motorists should complete before heading out into holiday traffic, along with packing tips to ensure a safe and comfortable journey. For instance, drivers are advised to take loose change, a sat-nav, and a torch with their belongings.
The motoring experts said: "Good drivers are always prepared. Take these essentials with you on your next road trip: Important documents: Remember your driving licence, car insurance details, travel insurance documents and to keep the number for breakdown services handy."
"Sat-nav: As well as giving you directions, a sat-nav can remind you of the speed limit and help you find nearby service stations. It’s a little old-school but still take a road atlas with you as back-up in case your sat-nav fails!"
"Loose change: Keep a few coins in the glovebox for toll roads and parking charges. Luckily, most places now take card or payment via mobile device."
The RAC added: "First-aid kit: In case of minor bumps and scrapes of the human variety, keep a first-aid kit in your boot that includes plasters, bandages and cortisone cream for insect bites. Torch: You can use your phone, but a torch is easier to hold if you need to look under your car or inside the bonnet."
"Make sure the batteries are working and take some spares just in case. Water and food: If it is a long trip, you will need to stay refreshed and focused on driving. Being hydrated is very important."
