Millions of motorists could be parking incorrectly on their driveways without knowing it, according to industry experts. While most drivers pull straight onto their driveway upon returning home, Rule 201 of the Highway Code states: "Do not reverse from a side road into a main road. When using a driveway, reverse in and drive out if you can."
Why reversing onto driveways is safer
Specialists at One Sure Insurance caution that the overwhelming majority of those parking on their driveways may be unaware they could be doing so incorrectly, thereby reducing visibility and increasing the risk of accidents and collisions. Reversing onto a driveway enables motorists to park safely in a controlled space and subsequently rejoin traffic facing forwards, significantly improving visibility and minimising danger.
A spokesperson said: "Many drivers don't realise that the way they park on their own driveway can have an impact on road safety. Reversing onto your driveway may take a few extra seconds, but it means you can drive out with much better visibility, reducing the risk of collisions with passing vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists."
Liability and car park advice
"In many cases, drivers who are reversing at the time of a collision can be presumed to be at fault. While liability always depends on the circumstances, reversing into your driveway instead of out onto a busy road is a simple habit that can help make manoeuvres safer and reduce the likelihood of disputes," the spokesperson added.
Experts advise that motorists can apply the same logic in car parks at supermarkets, retail centres and workplaces. "Some employers have even made reverse parking mandatory," the spokesperson said. "This is because it is generally safer reversing into a fixed parking bay than areas where other cars and employees are moving."
Other Highway Code reversing rules
"Motorists should choose the safest way to park depending on the situation and conditions they are presented with. The most important thing when parking is to always check blind spots, mirrors and reversing aids such as parking sensors and cameras. Remember to signal in advance of turning and do not rush parking manoeuvres, even when you feel under pressure," the spokesperson concluded.
Rule 201 is one of several Highway Code rules related to reversing. Rule 200 advises choosing an appropriate place to manoeuvre, waiting until finding a safe place to turn around, and avoiding reversing or turning round in a busy road. Rule 202 instructs drivers to look carefully before reversing, using all mirrors, checking the blind spot, and checking for pedestrians, cyclists, and obstructions, while reversing slowly and getting someone to guide if visibility is unclear. Rule 203 states that drivers must not reverse further than necessary.
