A wildfire on Llanwonno mountain in the Rhondda has been declared a major incident, with authorities confirming that some fires were set deliberately. The blaze, which has been burning since Saturday afternoon, has scorched an area equivalent to 200 football pitches.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) confirmed on Tuesday that the major incident status remains active due to the ongoing scale of the wildfire and challenging conditions on the mountain, including poor visibility caused by low cloud, mist and rain.
In a joint-agency message with South Wales Police, SWFRS said there were reports of deliberate fire-setting on the mountain overnight. Anyone with information is asked to contact South Wales Police or neighbourhood policing and fire crime teams.
Resources deployed to fight the blaze
Natural Resources Wales has secured the deployment of a specialist firefighting helicopter as part of the response. However, poor weather, including forecasted thunderstorms, has delayed its arrival, with conditions being assessed throughout Tuesday.
Despite damp weather overnight, the mountain continues to smoulder. Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed where possible, and those with health concerns from smoke should seek medical advice.
Communities protected, road closures in place
The fire service said communities in Ferndale are well protected, with efforts focused on protecting the Cwmaman side of the mountain and containing the fire within forestry and upland areas. Road closures remain in place in Blaenllechau to allow equipment access, and a temporary no-fly zone, including for drones, is in effect.
Firefighters worked through the night in challenging conditions. The service's latest update reiterates the major incident status and appeals for information about deliberate fire-setting, urging witnesses to call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously.
