Lisa Fryett, a British woman from Canvey Island, has died in Spain after being caught in a devastating wildfire, leaving her partner Simon Batchelor in critical condition. The couple were holidaying near Bédar and Los Gallardos when the blaze erupted.
Rescue and hospitalisation
Relatives confirmed that the pair were rescued from the mountainside the day after the wildfire broke out and were taken to a Spanish medical facility in critical condition. Lisa passed away on July 28, with her family at her bedside in Spain.
A GoFundMe campaign, set up to assist the family, confirmed the tragic news. The page said: "Our hearts are completely broken, and there are simply no words to describe the pain we are feeling. Lisa fought so incredibly hard, and we are so grateful that her loved ones were able to be by her side, surrounding her with love until the very end."
Community support
The fundraising page also expressed gratitude for the support received: "We would like to thank every single person who has donated, shared our fundraiser, or kept our family in your thoughts and prayers. The love, kindness and generosity we have received have brought us comfort during the most devastating time of our lives."
Over £65,000 has been raised so far, with funds ensuring Lisa receives "the beautiful send off she truly deserves". Simon remains in hospital fighting for his life, and the family has asked for continued support: "Please continue to keep Simon in your thoughts and prayers as he remains in critical condition."
Official response
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."
