People are being urged not to bathe at a North East beach following reports of a possible fuel or oil spill. Northumberland County Council and the Environment Agency have asked visitors to Blyth South Beach to refrain from bathing in the water after a "strong-smelling substance" was discovered.
Pollution incident logged
Information on the Environment Agency's water quality website states a pollution incident was logged at 5.10pm on Tuesday (August 11). In a public statement on Wednesday, Northumberland County Council said investigations were ongoing into the incident.

An announcement from the council said: "The Environment Agency has made us aware of a pollution incident at Blyth Beach. A strong-smelling substance has been identified after forming a sheen in pools of water and on the sand. Investigations are ongoing, but as a precautionary measure we are asking visitors to the area not to bathe in the water at this time."
