Whitley Bay beach in the North East of England has secured third place in a national ranking of UK and Irish beaches conducted by the AA, scoring 73.50 out of 100. The study analysed 228 beaches using data including Google reviews, parking costs, lifeguard services, RNLI lifeboat station proximity, Google search volumes, and July sunshine hours. Whitley Bay was the only North East beach in the top five.
Key Strengths: Parking, Water Quality, and Popularity
The AA highlighted the beach's "cheap as chips" parking, costing just £3 for a full day. It also noted the "excellent" water quality, lifeguard patrols during summer, and a lifeboat station within five miles. The beach boasts a 4.7 average Google review score and 74,500 monthly Google searches, making it the most sought-after beach in the rankings according to the AA. Visitors have access to restaurants, cafes, shops, canoe and kayak hire, and the iconic Spanish City landmark.
The Downside: Chilly Water Temperatures
The AA pointed out that the average water temperature in July is 14°C, describing it as "on the chillier side." However, this does not deter local families from swimming. The beach retained its Blue Flag and Seaside Award status earlier in 2026.
Comparison with Other Beaches
Exmouth Beach in Devon took top spot with a score of 76.42, while Broughty Ferry Beach in Dundee, Scotland, scored 63.91. Whitley Bay's score of 73.50 exceeded that of the Scottish winner.
Local Context
Whitley Bay has recently been named among top spots for fish and chips. The beach's two-mile sandy bay and local facilities continue to attract visitors, with the AA stating its success "will come as no surprise to locals."
