Casualty star William Beck has confirmed the medical drama will air fewer episodes when it enters its new era next year. Back in 2025, the BBC shared the news that Casualty had been put out to tendering. The process decided which producer makes the show, and the baton was eventually handed over to BBC Studios.
We knew that change was expected as a result of this development, but we just didn’t know how much. Fortunately, we now have a better idea of what the new era of Casualty will look like, as Dylan Keogh star William Beck revealed in a chat with me that fewer episodes will be broadcast next year compared to what we’re used to.
What William Beck said about the new era
‘I guess it flings all the doors to the future open’, the actor said, discussing how the upcoming 40th anniversary episodes set us up for what’s next. ‘It’s so easy, when you’re celebrating 40 years, to concentrate on what’s gone before, right? However, we also have this brand new opportunity to Bristol fashion this show.
He added: ‘We don’t even, strictly speaking, know how many episodes are going to be going out next year. We know it’s going to be fewer. It’s going to be a different show in a different place, ultimately, and that’s no secret.’
‘We’re going to look forward to seeing how that presents itself. This is a pair of episodes that just fling open the doors of the future. I don’t think I disclose any kind of trade secret if I say, why don’t you tell us what you want?’ You heard him!
Cast tease the 40th anniversary episodes
Joining Will for our chat were Melanie Hill and Neet Mohan, known for their roles as Siobhan McKenzie and Rash Masum. Sharing more teasers about the next series, Mel explained: ‘The first episodes of the next series that we’ve shot, not giving anything away, but these 40th celebration episodes were massive, and you think, we cannot ever top that, but these scripts came through the door and I was like, I cannot believe the ambition of the show has just notched up because we’re shooting less.’
Neet noted: ‘Like Mel and Will said, the 40th is these amazing two episodes, and then we kick off the next series, with amazing episodes as well. The show has always changed and evolved, and I think that’s testament to its success. ‘And I think, like Will says, flings the doors open to a whole new era, which is really exciting.’
Rash Masum's new role in Holby ED
The anniversary episodes will see Rash take on a new role in Holby ED, following the development in the previous boxset that he’s now become a consultant. Calling it the ‘worst shift’ Rash ‘could’ve imagined’, Neet said the journey his character goes on in the instalments will end up helping Rash’s confidence.
‘I think there was a real relief about getting there. And then I think, given the circumstances, it’s probably the worst shift he could’ve imagined. ‘I think we meet him at a point of, well, he struggled with his confidence a lot, and this couldn’t be more of a pressure situation for him to step up and find it in himself to show more than anyone else that he deserves to be there.’
The Casualty 40th Anniversary special episodes will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on September 5th 2026.
