Bamburgh, a seaside village in Northumberland with a population of just 400, has been named the best in the UK for the sixth consecutive year. Consumer experts at Which? ranked it as the top seaside destination for 2026, citing its scenery, cleanliness, and peaceful atmosphere.
Village Charm and Castle
The village is famous for its golden beach and historic Bamburgh Castle, an enormous fortress sitting on a rocky outcrop by the sea. The castle spans over 1,400 years of history, once serving as the royal heart of Northumbria. It is open daily from 10am to 5pm, and visitors are recommended to allow two to three hours to explore the grounds, battlements, and museum.
Beach and Activities
Bamburgh Beach offers vast expanses of golden sand and rolling dunes, with direct views of the castle. It is dog-friendly and ideal for long walks, kite flying, and photography. The beach rarely feels crowded, even in summer. A small kiosk called "The Hut" near The Wynding access point provides drinks and snacks. Parking is available near the castle and village streets.
Village Amenities
The village itself is peaceful, with charming stone cottages, clean streets, and walkability. It features cosy cafes, atmospheric pubs, and local gift shops. Attractions include the Grace Darling Museum, run by the RNLI, and St Aidan's Church with an ancient crypt ossuary. Which? noted that the village has become more popular with tourists but has not been overwhelmed by holiday lets.
