South Shields has been named the fourth-best seaside destination in the UK for a night out, according to a new study by boat insurer GJW Direct. The Great British Coastal Resort Index analysed 50 of the UK's most popular seaside resorts, scoring them on the number of pubs, bars, clubs, and restaurants within a five-mile radius.
South Shields Scores High on Pub Count
South Shields stood out for its exceptional choice of pubs, boasting 243 within a five-mile radius—16 more than Brighton, which topped the rankings with 227. The town also offers 214 restaurants and 21 bars and clubs, earning a total score of 13.9 out of 30.
Brighton took the top spot with a near-perfect score of 29.3, followed by Blackpool (19.8) and Bournemouth (16.5). After South Shields, Southend-on-Sea (11.1), Margate (10), and Tynemouth (9.7) rounded out the top seven. Torquay (8.7), Hastings (8), and Folkestone (7.8) completed the top 10.
Tynemouth Also Makes the List
Tynemouth, another North East coastal town, ranked seventh with a score of 9.7. The study noted that both South Shields and Tynemouth have recently received recognition for their beaches, with Tynemouth re-awarded Blue Flag status and Seaside Awards for 2026.
GJW Direct commented: "We wanted to find out which UK seaside destinations have the best options for a night out, because what British holiday is complete without a pint with the locals after a day out by the sea?"
North East Coastal Success Continues
The latest recognition follows a run of success for both towns. Earlier this year, they featured in a round-up of top beaches to visit this summer. The study highlights the North East's growing appeal as a coastal nightlife destination, challenging the usual dominance of cities like Newcastle.
