Travel expert Simon Calder has championed two surprising seaside towns as his ultimate holiday destinations. With many Brits opting to stay closer to home for their summer breaks this year, the UK's warm weather has made staycations increasingly appealing.
Blackpool: The Classic Seaside Escape
Appearing on the Travel Expert with Simon Calder podcast, he named Blackpool as his number one choice for a classic seaside escape. Simon said: "Why would you not go there. If you cannot find it in Blackpool, then probably you shouldn't be travelling. It is brilliant. You have got a couple of piers and a beautiful, wide beach with plenty of room for everybody."
"Forget the Burj Khalifa, you have got the Blackpool Tower. You can see all the way across the Fylde peninsula from the top, and on a clear day, you might be able to see the Isle of Man."
Simon's enthusiasm didn't stop there, as he declared the Tower Ballroom to be the "most beautiful room in Britain". For those after a fun day out, he recommended a visit to Pleasure Beach, rounded off with fish and chips and a stick of rock.
Aberdeen: The Greatest City Beach
For culture and cuisine, Simon chose Aberdeen as the "greatest city beach in the UK". Elaborating on his underrated selection, Simon said: "Honestly, if you have not been there, it is just a delight."
He noted there is a "really lovely" sandy beach stretching a couple of miles and boasting plenty of room. While you might not spot many people taking a dip, Simon said there are "lovely" spots to eat and drink along the shoreline.
There is an art gallery and a maritime museum to explore. For food and drink, Simon tipped Silverdarling, which sits on the waterfront and serves "superb" seafood.
Other Recommendations
His podcast co-host Greg Dickinson asked whether there was anything in Blackpool for "travel snobs" like himself. Simon responded: "You can get a boutique B&B experience, and of course, it's not just the main bit of Blackpool. You can get a tram to the lovely area of Fleetwood, where you have got an old vibe. It is lovely."
Following the third heatwave of the summer, coastal destinations have become a top choice for sun-seekers. With a wealth of seaside spots to choose from across the UK, picking the perfect destination can prove tricky.
