BBC Radio 2 presenter Owain Wyn Evans has announced he will cycle nearly 400 miles through all four UK nations this November for BBC Children in Need. The Ammanford-born star will pedal across Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales in the five-day challenge.
Speaking to BBC Breakfast's Charlie Stayt and Sarah Campbell, Owain confessed he is finding the training 'really difficult' due to his lack of balance. While he explained that measures are being implemented to provide support throughout the challenge, he acknowledged it's 'not familiar territory'.
New experience for non-athlete
Highlighting that he is not an athlete or athletic, Owain told the BBC presenters it was a 'new experience' he was embracing. The challenge will start in Glasgow on 9 November, with the route taking him through Scotland, Northern Ireland and England before finishing in central Cardiff on Friday, 13 November.
Commenting on the upcoming task, Owain told the BBC: "When I said yes to this challenge, I knew it would push me well outside my comfort zone. It’s going to be tough, demanding and probably a little daunting at times, but I’m ready to give it absolutely everything I’ve got."
Second Children in Need challenge
This is Owain's second challenge for BBC Children in Need, as he took part in BBC Breakfast's Drumathon in 2021, drumming for 24 hours and raising more than £3.8 million. He added: "Sara, Paddy and Vernon have achieved some truly extraordinary things for BBC Children in Need over the years, so I’ve got a lot to live up to. Hopefully, I’ll have the incredible support of Radio 2 listeners behind me from start to finish."
Helen Thomas, Head of Radio 2, said: "Once again Radio 2 is supporting BBC Children in Need with an incredible multi-day challenge, this time taken on by our resident early bird and host of Early Breakfast, Owain. I know our amazing listeners right across the UK will come together on air and on the streets to support him, as he pushes himself to his limit across all four nations."
BBC Breakfast is available to watch on BBC One weekdays from 6am.
