Norwich has been named the best city break in the UK for 2026 by Time Out, surpassing popular destinations such as London, Edinburgh and Bath. The magazine highlighted Norwich as an "underrated" spot with rich history, affordable options and a vibrant cultural scene.
Medieval Heritage and Historic Attractions
Norwich is described as England's most complete medieval city, with cobbled lanes and buildings largely unchanged since Norman times. The Norwich Cathedral, a Grade I listed building dating back to 1145, is a key attraction. Designed by architect John de Ramsey, it features a Gothic exterior, the highest Norman tower in England, and the largest monastic cloisters. A recent TripAdvisor visitor called it "amazing, very impressive size and absolutely beautiful inside and out."
Cultural and Artistic Highlights
The Sainsbury Centre offers works by Picasso, Degas and Lalique, with outdoor sculptures in its park. It also served as a filming location for two Marvel movies. The city's Golden Triangle area, dubbed the "Notting Hill of Norwich," is a hub of shops, cafes and pubs, centred on Unthank Road with the popular Unthank Arms.
Food and Drink Scene
As a major student hub, Norwich boasts quirky cafes, bars and clubs. The Gardeners Arms, also known as The Murders, has been serving pints since 1841 and offers traditional Sunday roasts. Its nickname stems from an 1895 murder of the landlady's daughter by her estranged husband. A recent visitor praised the Unthank Arms for "lovely food, friendly staff and lovely outdoor seating."
