The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for British tourists visiting Greece following a series of attacks this week. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) warned that 'terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Greece'.
The FCDO noted that there have been several attacks involving explosives and automatic weapons targeting Greek institutions, shopping malls, banks, media offices, diplomatic premises and the police. One attack on 1 July involved three improvised incendiary devices at the residential properties of Greek political figures, killing one person and injuring four others.
While there is no current advice against travel to Greece, the FCDO cautioned that attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals. The authority stated that 'no travel can be guaranteed safe' and urged British travellers to stay aware of their surroundings at all times.
The FCDO also highlighted the global threat of terrorism affecting UK interests and British nationals, recommending that travellers follow advice from UK Counter Terrorism Policing on staying safe abroad. British holidaymakers are advised to ensure they have adequate travel insurance and check for updated guidance before departure.
