A viral fruit hack claims shoppers can guarantee crunchy grapes every time by checking one specific part of the packaging. Instead of relying on luck, the trick involves looking for the word 'variety' printed in tiny lettering just beneath the date on the packet.
Katie Sharkey, who shared the tip online, explained that for those who love big, crunchy grapes, there is "nothing worse when you buy a packet of grapes and they're mushy." She said the discovery completely "changed her life." In a video filmed at her local supermarket, she demonstrated how to tell whether grapes will be crunchy or not.
Which Variety to Choose
The first packets she picked up were Thompson grapes, but she warned these are not the ones to go for if crunch is the goal. Instead, she advised looking for packets that specifically state Autumn/Crisp. She described these as "so, so good" and absolutely "the ones you want to get."
"So when you're buying your grapes, look for the variety, and if it says Autumn Crisp, then you're onto a winner," she shared. She also revealed that Tesco stocks them, and M&S "often do them" too "if you're struggling to find them anywhere else."
Shopper Tips and Reactions
In the comments section, one follower urged her to "try cotton candy grapes," though these tend to divide opinion. Another user offered advice on checking freshness: "Best tip I ever heard, even for autumn crisps, is make sure the stalks are still green. If the stalks in the bunch aren't green and are going brown, they're older grapes and won't be as crunchy or nice!"
A third commenter suggested "freezing them" as it tastes "like a sorbet." A fourth added: "Ok this is true but I've just had even crunchier grapes and THE crunchiest ever and they were 'sheegene 20'." The tip ultimately comes down to personal taste when it comes to choosing grapes.
