Folkestone has been transformed from a derelict area to a trendy destination, earning a spot on Time Out's list of best seaside towns for 2026. The arrival of the King Charles III Coastal Path has made the UK's coastline fully walkable, drawing attention to stunning seaside towns like Folkestone.
Creative Quarter
At the heart of Folkestone lies the Creative Quarter, a thriving cultural hub overseen by Creative Folkestone. This charity has restored over 90 buildings, now home to independent studios, cafes, and creative businesses. The area's rainbow-hued shopfronts and winding streets make it instantly recognizable and a standout destination.
One TripAdvisor visitor said: "Today was my first visit to Folkestone, and we wanted to visit the Creative Quarter. Was not disappointed. Fabulous sunny day, helps, of course. Cobble streets and set on a hill. So might not be great for some. Wonderful galleries and fabulous eateries. Quirky shops and friendly people. I will visit again."
Harbour Arm
The historic Harbour Arm, once a railway terminal for the Folkestone-Boulogne Ferry and a departure point for troops in World War I, has been transformed into a vibrant setting for dining, drinks, and live entertainment. It hosts over 70 independent vendors, reflecting the town's commitment to local businesses.
A visitor commented: "Folkestone Harbour Arm has been transformed into a remarkable destination - a vibrant blend of artistic flair, seaside heritage, and excellent food. We thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful walk to the lighthouse, passing a compact market area and plenty of great food stalls."
Beaches
Folkestone offers sandy bays and pebble beaches, with Sunny Sands being a favorite. Located near the harbour, it has soft sands for sunbathing and sandcastles, plus facilities for water sports. It's one of the nearest beaches to London, less than an hour away, making it popular for day trips. Parking is available at the Harbour Arm Car Park, though it fills quickly in peak season.
One visitor summed it up: "Beautiful beach, lovely day out. Fabulous views and scenery. Great for all ages. Lots to see and do. Very clean beach, worth a visit."
