The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a travel warning for anyone heading to France from today, due to a large fire near Bordeaux Airport that is causing disruption to flights and road closures.
Wildfire near Bordeaux Airport
The FCDO shared an alert stating: "A large fire has broken out near Bordeaux Airport. Disruption to flights is likely and some roads around the airport have been temporarily closed." Travellers are advised to check with their travel operator before travelling, including for connecting flights.
High risk of wildfires in France
The Foreign Office also highlighted a high risk of wildfires during the summer season from April to October. Advice on the Safety and security page notes that wildfires can start anywhere in France, particularly along the Mediterranean coast and in Corsica. The French weather service has launched a fire alert map to help travellers stay updated.
The FCDO added: "Fires have become more frequent because of drought and high temperatures. French authorities may evacuate areas and close roads for safety reasons." Causing a wildfire is illegal in France, even accidentally, with penalties including fines or prison sentences.
Travellers in high-risk areas should consult French government advice on what to do if a wildfire breaks out, how to prevent outbreaks, and protecting homes (including mandatory bush clearance). In an emergency, call 18 (fire) or 112 (emergency services).
France follows Schengen area rules: passports must be issued less than 10 years before arrival and expire at least three months after departure.
