Brit tourist, 54, dies swimming at Bali beauty spot on family holiday

A 54-year-old British tourist has died while swimming at Crystal Bay Beach on Nusa Penida island, part of Indonesia's Klungkung Regency, according to local reports.

Incident on family holiday

The man, from the UK, was on a sightseeing tour of Nusa Penida, a small island south-east of Bali, with his family when he got into difficulty in the water on Sunday.

Indonesian news outlet detikcom quoted Klungkung Police spokesperson I Dewa Nyoman Alit Purnawibawa as saying: “The victim was a British citizen who was on vacation with his family.”

Search and rescue operation

The family arrived at the beach at around 2.30pm local time when their driver gave them an hour to explore Crystal Bay, The Mirror reports. When the man failed to return to the meeting point, a search operation was launched.

He was later taken to Griya Penida Medical Clinic by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.

Cause of death confirmed

The police spokesperson reportedly said: "According to the medical team, the victim was pronounced dead after fluid entered his lungs, causing cardiac arrest as a result of drowning."
