Barry Island was packed on Saturday as temperatures soared to 31°C, with the Met Office predicting the heatwave will persist for several more days. The scenes at the popular Welsh seaside destination rivaled those of Mediterranean beaches, as thousands flocked to enjoy the sun, sea, and ice cream.
Crowds Flock to Barry Island
People arrived by cars and coaches, filling the famous seaside town as the mercury climbed. Many visitors wore swimwear and took dips in the sea to cool off, while others sought shade under umbrellas. The atmosphere was festive, with friends sharing ice creams and groups enjoying hen parties on the sand.
The Met Office confirmed that temperatures in Barry reached 31°C on Saturday afternoon, feeling every bit that hot with little sea breeze. The heatwave is expected to continue, with similar highs forecast for Sunday in south Wales, including Cardiff, Swansea, and Newport, where temperatures around 30°C are expected from afternoon into mid-evening.
Forecast for the Week Ahead
Mid, west, and north Wales will be slightly cooler, with temperatures in the very high 20s. According to the Met Office, the weather maps show that Monday through Thursday will see temperatures in the mid to high 20s across the country during the afternoon and into the evening.
The Met Office forecast for Wales reads: “Monday: any overnight mist and low cloud quickly clearing to leave a dry and sunny but breezy day across Wales. Feeling very warm once again as the heatwave continues. Maximum temperature 30 °C. Tuesday to Thursday: Little changes throughout the middle of the week with the largely dry, settled and very warm weather continuing. A small chance of a few thunderstorms developing by Wednesday.”
Beach Activities and Safety
RNLI lifeguards kept watch over swimmers to ensure safety. Surfers took advantage of the waves, and groups from Surf Lifesaving Wales were also present. Vendors served fruit cups reminiscent of Wimbledon, and visitors enjoyed healthy snacks while soaking up the sun.
The gallery of images shows thousands of people lining the shoreline, friends enjoying ice cream, and beachgoers applying sunscreen in creative ways. The scenes captured the joy of a classic British seaside day under extreme heat.
