The GFS weather model indicates a steady rise in temperatures from July 29, with highs of 31C possible in the south-east of England, followed by 30C in southern England on July 30 and 31C in south-western areas on July 31. Wales could also see 30C on July 31.
Potential Record-Breaking Temperatures on August 1
The model forecasts a dramatic spike on August 1, with staggering highs of 41C in the east of England. A large swath of the country from Sussex to Lincolnshire, including London, could see 40C. The Midlands may reach 38C, and Yorkshire could hit 37C. Parts of Wales near the English border might see 31-32C, while Scotland and Northern Ireland are expected to stay below 30C and 25C, respectively.
Counties Facing 40C or More
According to the GFS model, ten counties in eastern England could experience temperatures of 40C or higher: Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Surrey, Kent, and Sussex.
Met Office Forecast
The Met Office's forecast for late July indicates conditions will be "warmest in the south" and could become "very warm again by the start of August." For the period August 2 to August 16, the Met Office states: "Temperatures will very likely remain above normal, with potential for further hot spells, particularly in the south." However, there is also a risk of thunderstorms, as "occasional summertime thunderstorms are possible on some days given the right ingredients."
