The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind across Scotland, Northern Ireland, north Wales and northern England from 6am on Monday to 6am on Tuesday, as Storm Floris is forecast to bring unseasonably strong winds to the UK.
Gusts of up to 85mph are possible on exposed coasts and hills, particularly in Scotland during the afternoon and night. Inland areas may see westerly gusts of 40 to 50mph, while exposed coasts and high ground could experience 70mph. Heavy rain is also expected, potentially causing transport disruption.
The Met Office warned of flying debris, large waves, and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, posing a danger to life. Roof tiles may be blown off, power cuts are possible, and road, rail, air, and ferry services could be disrupted, with roads and bridges potentially closed.
Storm Floris is the sixth named storm of the 2024-25 season, which runs from early September to late August. The most recent storm was Storm Éowyn in January. While named storms are more frequent in late autumn and winter, they are not uncommon in summer, according to the Met Office.
Before Monday, no weather warnings are in place. Friday is expected to bring some showers that will clear by evening, leaving fine weather. Saturday is forecast to be dry with plenty of sunshine and light winds, while Sunday will be breezier with rain clearing to sunnier skies later.
