A brutal monsoon storm has unleashed fatal flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka, claiming at least 31 lives and sparking a major evacuation effort.
Casualties and Widespread Damage
The powerful weather system has brought devastation, with at least 31 people confirmed killed and another 14 individuals reported missing. The intense rainfall, which has already delivered around 100 millimetres of water, is forecast to worsen significantly, with a further 250 millimetres expected today.
Mass Evacuations Underway
Authorities have initiated mass evacuations in the most vulnerable parts of the country in a desperate attempt to prevent further loss of life. The relentless downpour has triggered dangerous landslides and caused rivers to burst their banks, submerging homes and infrastructure.
Rescue teams are working in extremely challenging conditions to reach those trapped by the rising waters and debris. The situation remains critical as the nation braces for more torrential rain, which threatens to hamper rescue operations and exacerbate the existing crisis.
