A man has died after a tree fell onto a caravan during Storm Goretti in Cornwall, as severe weather warnings remain in place across much of the UK for the weekend.
Devon and Cornwall Police said emergency services were called at approximately 7:35pm on Thursday to the Mawgan area of Helston. The man, in his 50s, was found dead in the caravan. His death is not being treated as suspicious, and his next of kin have been informed.
Storm Goretti has brought winds of nearly 100mph, prompting a rare red warning for dangerous winds in the south-west. Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in effect across Scotland, northern and eastern England, while Wales, the Midlands, and south-west England face icy conditions. Northern Ireland is under a yellow warning for heavy rain. A more severe amber warning for snow is in place inland of Aberdeen, Perth, and Stirling in Scotland.
Nearly 22,200 properties in the south-west were without power as of Saturday afternoon, along with over 1,700 in the Midlands. National Grid reported all power had been restored in Wales. Downing Street said support was being offered to affected homes, and National Rail warned of possible service disruptions across England, Wales, and Scotland.
The Met Office advised those in alert areas to prepare for travel delays and take extra care on icy surfaces. Meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth said Saturday would start cold with icy stretches, followed by dry and sunny conditions for many, though eastern England may see sleety showers.
