A man has been found dead after a tree fell onto a caravan in Cornwall as the UK continues to grapple with the aftermath of Storm Goretti.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Devon and Cornwall Police reported that emergency services were called to the Mawgan area of Helston at approximately 7.35pm on Thursday, 9 January 2026. The force confirmed that a man in his 50s was discovered deceased inside the vehicle. Work to remove the tree was carried out on Friday.
Police stated that his death is not being treated as suspicious and that his next of kin have been informed.
Widespread Disruption from the Storm
The storm, which brought winds of nearly 100mph to the South West following a rare red warning, has caused significant disruption across the nation. According to the National Grid's website, around 27,000 properties were without power in the South West at 9am on Saturday. This was alongside nearly 2,300 in the West Midlands and about 300 in the East Midlands, though power had been restored in Wales.
Downing Street confirmed that support was being offered to households left without electricity.
Ongoing Weather Warnings and Travel Advice
Yellow warnings for snow and ice remain in force across parts of the UK until Sunday, with National Rail advising that disruption to services may continue through the weekend in England, Wales, and Scotland. Forecasters have also warned that a combination of melting snow and rain will increase flood risks in the coming days.
Significant snowfalls were recorded, including 27cm at Altnaharra in Sutherland and 15cm at Lake Vyrnwy in Powys. A Met Office yellow warning for snow and ice is active until 3pm on Saturday, with a further 2-5cm of snow likely on hills and up to 15cm possible in parts of central and eastern Scotland above 300m.
Separate ice warnings cover large parts of England and Wales until midday Saturday, with a fresh snow and ice warning issued for Sunday for Scotland, the Midlands, north-east and north-west England, and Yorkshire.
Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth urged caution for Saturday morning due to the risk of "icy stretches," advising the public to wrap up warm and take extra time when travelling to avoid slips and falls.
