A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of southern Alaska on Thursday morning, shaking residents in Anchorage and the surrounding Kenai Peninsula. The quake occurred just after 9:30 a.m. local time, approximately 110 miles south of Anchorage, a city of nearly 300,000 people.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake had a depth of about 15 miles. Despite moderate shaking felt by residents, no immediate damage was reported. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed there was no tsunami risk.
Alaska is one of the most seismically active regions globally. The state experienced the second-largest earthquake ever recorded in 1964, a magnitude 9.2 event that devastated southern Alaska.
