UK to see biggest solar eclipse since 1999 today

The UK is set to witness its most significant solar eclipse since 1999 today, with up to 96 per cent of the Sun obscured in some areas, according to Royal Museums Greenwich.

Eclipse coverage and timing

In parts of Europe, including Spain's Balearic Islands and parts of Iceland, a total eclipse will occur, transforming day into night. The UK's last solar eclipse in March 2025 covered only 30-40 per cent of the Sun, whereas today's event will obscure more than 90 per cent.

From Manchester, around 91 per cent of the Sun's light is expected to be blocked. The eclipse will begin just after 6pm, with the maximum occurring between about 7.05pm and 7.13pm BST. In Greater Manchester, the event starts at 6.13pm and ends at 8.03pm, peaking at 7.10pm.

How to view safely

The best viewing location is anywhere with a clear view of the western horizon. Experts stress that looking directly at the Sun is dangerous. Safe methods include using polarised solar lenses or indirect viewers such as pinhole projectors.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns that sunglasses "do not provide adequate protection for viewing a solar eclipse" and should never be used to look directly at the Sun. They reduce glare, making it feel more comfortable to look longer while still allowing harmful radiation to reach the retina.

RAS President Professor Jim Wild said: "I would encourage everyone to enjoy the spectacle safely. Never look directly at the Sun without appropriate solar viewing equipment. Certified eclipse glasses, specially designed solar filters for telescopes and binoculars, or indirect methods such as pinhole projectors are all safe ways to observe the event. With the right precautions, this eclipse promises to be an inspiring experience for seasoned astronomers and first-time skywatchers alike."
