The UK's prolonged spell of extreme heat is coming to an end, with thunderstorms and rain expected across much of the country. Scotland and Northern Ireland experienced cooler temperatures and rain on Sunday, while north-west England saw rainfall later in the day. The Met Office's extreme heat warning, which covered large parts of England and Wales for four days, has now been lifted.
Temperatures reached 34.1°C in Charlwood, Surrey, on Sunday, but the heat was less intense than July's record-breaking heatwave. The shift in weather patterns, from high to low pressure, has created unstable air, increasing the likelihood of thundery showers. A yellow thunderstorm warning is in effect for Scotland and Northern Ireland until Monday, extending to England and Wales on Monday and Tuesday.
The heatwave has had severe consequences, including a teenage boy's death at Skegness beach and numerous wildfires across England. The National Fire Chiefs' Council reported 745 wildfires this year, a significant increase from 247 last year. Two men were arrested on suspicion of arson after a disposable barbecue caused a fire in Norfolk.
Despite the rain, experts warn that a prolonged period of wet weather is needed to alleviate drought conditions. An official drought was declared in eight areas of England on Friday, leading to water restrictions and hosepipe bans. The Environment Agency stated that water supplies for the public are sufficient but urged conservation.
