The head of the company that built the Bayesian superyacht has described the vessel as 'unsinkable', as investigations continue into its sinking off the coast of Sicily. Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the yacht's manufacturer Perini Navi, told Sky News that the boat was designed to be 'the safest in the most absolute sense'.
Mr Costantino insisted there were no design flaws in the Bayesian, which capsized in a storm and sank within minutes. In an interview with Italian TV, he attributed the tragedy to 'human error', adding that the ship 'sank because it took on water'. He said the sinking lasted 16 minutes, based on AIS data.
The yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered from the sea on Monday. Six bodies have been recovered in total, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. Other victims include Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, and lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda.
The Italian Coastguard has not ruled out the possibility that survivors might have been trapped in air pockets as the yacht sank. Mr Costantino expressed disbelief at the incident, calling it 'an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact'.
