Met Office: 7 UK Regions Face Heavy Rain on Friday

The Met Office has warned that seven regions across the UK will be hit by heavy rain on Friday, even as temperatures are expected to soar to 38C in some areas. The national weather agency's latest forecast maps show significant downpours arriving in the early morning, particularly affecting central Scotland and the England-Wales border.

While the UK is experiencing its hottest June temperature on record this week, with the mercury potentially reaching 40C under red and amber warnings, the rain is set to bring a temporary reprieve to some northern and western areas. The heaviest rainfall is predicted around 2:45am in northern and central Scotland, as well as along the border between England and Wales. By 7am, north-eastern regions will also see rain.

Forecast Details

According to the Met Office, rain and thundery showers are likely over north-west Scotland on Thursday. Low cloud and fog could affect North Sea coasts, though most regions will remain “widely very hot.” For Friday, the Met Office states: “Another hot day in the east on Friday. Fresher conditions gradually arriving from the west into the weekend, but this accompanied by spells of rain and thundery showers.”

The BBC's weekend forecast echoes this, noting: “Remaining very hot and humid on Friday and Saturday, though temperatures will tend to take a dip by Sunday which will feel cooler in comparison. There will be plenty of sunshine throughout the period with an added risk of a few scattered thunderstorms on Friday morning and again on Saturday afternoon and evening. A smaller risk of a few scattered thundery showers on Sunday too.”

Impact of the Weather

With temperatures expected to reach 34C in northern areas and 38C in the south on Friday, the rain may provide some relief, though it could also lead to localized flooding and travel disruptions. The Met Office's red and amber heat warnings remain in effect for England and Wales, with the possibility of 40C being recorded. Residents in affected regions are advised to stay hydrated and take precautions against the heat, while also being prepared for sudden downpours.
