A 19-year-old man has died after getting into difficulty in the water at Grasmere in the Lake District. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 4:35pm on Saturday, August 8, following reports that a young man was struggling in the water.
Emergency response and hospital death
Multiple emergency services responded, including an air ambulance. The teenager was recovered from the water and taken to hospital, where he later died. Cumbria Police have confirmed that the man's next of kin have been notified and are being supported by specialist officers.
Police appeal and thanks
The death is not being treated as suspicious. Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help establish the exact circumstances leading to the tragedy. Police have also thanked members of the public who attempted to help the teenager, including those who helped bring him ashore.
In a statement released on Sunday, August 9, Cumbria Police said: "Emergency services were called at around 4.35pm yesterday (Aug 8) to Grasmere lake following reports that a young man had gotten into difficulty in the water. Emergency services including an air ambulance attended and a 19-year-old man was taken to hospital but has subsequently died. The teenager's family have been made aware."
"While the death is not being treated as suspicious, police would encourage anyone who witnessed what occurred to come forward to assist in establishing the circumstances. Police would also like to thank those who came to the teenager's aid, including those who helped get him to shore."
