The friend of Jay Slater, the 19-year-old from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, who vanished in Tenerife in June 2024, has disclosed the harrowing final words he spoke before his death. Lucy Law, who had known Jay for around six years, was the last person to speak to him before he was found dead in a ravine in Parque Rural de Teno on July 15, 2024.
In a new Channel 4 documentary, Lucy recounted her desperate call to Spanish police after Jay had attended a music festival and then travelled with two men to an Airbnb in the national park area, 22 miles from where he was staying with friends. During the call, she told police: 'My friend, he's met some people, and they've drove him up into the mountains. I don't know why and he's left the house.' She added that Jay had said, 'No, I can't. I can't,' when she urged him to return to his friends for a ride back down.
Lucy then told the police: 'Yes, said he feels like he's going to die up there, and then the phone cut off.' The audio from this call, previously unheard, provides fresh insight into the events of June 17. Following the call, a large-scale search was initiated, concluding with the discovery of Jay's body near the village of Masca on July 15.
The documentary also reveals final CCTV footage of Jay. At 11:55pm, he was seen at Papagayo Nightclub, leaving just over an hour later at 1:04am. At 1:12am, he was refused re-entry. At 2:40am, he texted Lucy: 'Can't get in Papagayo they got marker on me.' She responded, and at 2:49am he replied: 'Doesn't matter it's OK. I on a mission.' The final CCTV footage shows him at Tramps Nightclub at 3:07am.
According to a coroner's report, Jay told friends he was 'in the middle of the mountains' and needed a drink, after attempting a 14-hour walk home following drug and alcohol use. The documentary, 'The Disappearance of Jay Slater', airs on Channel 4 on Sunday, September 28, at 9pm.
