Fire crews are battling a new wildfire in Blaenavon, just days after the landscape was devastated by a blaze that scorched 300 hectares. The fire at Cwmavon Woods was reported on Monday evening, and Cwmavon Road remains closed as firefighters continue to work at the scene.
Smoke Warnings Issued
Residents across south Wales have been urged to keep doors and windows shut due to smoke from the blaze. A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) spokesperson said: "Please close all windows and doors, as smoke is expected to affect residents in Blaenavon, Brynmawr, Cwmbran, Newport, Pontypool."
The spokesperson added: "Thank you for your calls. We are aware of the incident and crews remain at the scene. Please only call 999 if you have a new emergency to report. Anyone experiencing health concerns should seek appropriate medical advice."
Ongoing Wildfires Across Wales
The landscape around Blaenavon was already severely damaged, with vast areas of Mynydd Garnclochdy left blackened from a wildfire that started on July 12 and burned for over two weeks. Firefighters are also tackling wildfires in Wattsville, Sirhowy Valley, Abernant, Aberdare, Ferndale, and Llangynidr Reservoir.
Smoke from these fires is impacting people across Wales and the west of England. Avon Fire and Rescue Service noted on Monday that residents were reporting seeing and smelling smoke, believed to be linked to the South Wales wildfires.
Health Advice
Public Health Wales advises those affected to stay inside with windows and doors closed, turn off air conditioning, and limit time outdoors in smoky areas. Travellers should keep vehicle windows and vents closed. Those with inhalers should carry them, and if symptoms persist, seek advice from a GP or NHS 111.
