UK's First Heatwave of 2026 Brings 33C Temps for Bank Holiday Weekend
UK Heatwave: 33C Bank Holiday Weekend Ahead

Britain is enjoying its first heatwave of the year, with temperatures set to reach 33C over the bank holiday weekend. The nation has been making the most of the glorious weather, flocking to beaches, parks, and pub gardens as the three-day weekend begins.

Record Temperatures and Health Warnings

By lunchtime on Friday, the Met Office confirmed that the UK had already recorded its warmest day of the year so far, with the mercury hitting 26.9C near Heathrow. However, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber health alerts across the East Midlands, West Midlands, London, East of England, and South East, warning that high temperatures could significantly impact health and social care services. Vulnerable populations, including those aged over 65 and individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular or respiratory conditions, are advised to take precautions. Yellow alerts are in place for the rest of England.

Travel Disruption at Dover

The heatwave coincides with travel chaos at the port of Dover, where holidaymakers faced waits of up to three hours due to new EU passport controls. Thousands of passengers were stuck in their cars in sweltering conditions, missing planned ferry crossings. The Port of Dover reported wait times of between 150 and 180 minutes to pass through the buffer zone, with significant congestion expected on roads leading to the port.

Scenes Across the Country

Despite the travel woes, many Britons embraced the sunny weather. Beachgoers enjoyed the coast in Folkestone, while swimmers were spotted diving into the sea at Brighton. Ice cream vans appeared, signaling the start of summer, and tourists took sightseeing tours along the River Thames in London. In Blackpool, day-trippers lined the promenade, and some people took the opportunity to work on their tans. Even a four-legged friend was seen enjoying the warmth without a deckchair.

The hot spell is expected to continue through the weekend, with temperatures potentially reaching 33C in some areas. However, the UKHSA urges caution, especially for those with health conditions, and advises staying hydrated and avoiding the sun during peak hours.
