Amber Alert: Month's Rain in 24 Hours Sparks 'Danger to Life' Warning for Wales
Month's Rain in 24 Hours: Met Office 'Danger to Life' Alert

The Met Office has issued a severe amber weather warning for parts of south Wales, signalling a potential "danger to life" as forecasters predict an entire month's rainfall could deluge the region within just 24 hours. The alert is in place until midnight on Monday, 1 December 2025.

Widespread Disruption as Warnings Blanket the UK

Alongside the critical amber alert, a series of yellow rain warnings are active across a significant portion of the country. These cover parts of south-west and north-west England, central and northern Wales until 3am on Tuesday, and south-west Scotland until 9pm on Monday.

Met Office chief forecaster Rebekah Hicks detailed the threat: "Heavy rain will move over south Wales from late Sunday and through Monday. The largest accumulations are expected over the highest ground in south Wales and could reach 100-120mm through the day." She added that 60-80mm is likely for many hills within the amber zone, with 20-40mm expected at lower levels.

Risk of Landslides and Major Travel Chaos

The anticipated volume of rainfall has raised serious concerns about ground stability. A spokesperson from the British Geological Survey warned that the expected rainfall has previously triggered landslides in Wales. "Both natural and infrastructure slopes could be affected within the warning areas, with rainfall falling on slopes that are likely to already be saturated," they stated.

The spokesperson highlighted the significant risk of disruption: "There is potential for disruption to roads and railways within the warning area, this is likely to be particularly impactful in areas where there are long diversion routes."

In preparation, Natural Resources Wales has issued 38 flood alerts, urging residents to be ready for possible flooding. In England, the Environment Agency has posted five more serious flood warnings, indicating flooding is expected, alongside 44 alerts.

Five-Day Forecast: Showers and Further Rain Ahead

Looking beyond the immediate crisis, the Met Office's national forecast for the week suggests continued unsettled conditions:

Monday: Windy with spells of rain, heavy and persistent in the west. Local flooding is possible in south Wales and northwest England. Cold in the northwest, milder elsewhere.

Monday night: Cloudy, wet and windy for most, turning drier later with easing winds. Clear spells and scattered showers will develop in the south and west.

Tuesday: Scattered blustery showers will continue in the south and west, with a risk of hail and thunder. Largely dry elsewhere with sunny spells. Temperatures around average.

Wednesday to Friday: Largely dry on Wednesday with sunny spells and a few showers. Further spells of rain are expected to move across the UK on Thursday and Friday, with some brighter intervals in between.
