The Met Office has forecast "very warm" weather for Sunday, with temperatures reaching 26C in 14 areas across the UK. The national forecaster expects the mercury to climb again this weekend after a cooler end to August.
Predominantly southern regions will see temperatures return to the high 20s on Sunday afternoon. This follows the UK's hottest summer since temperature records began in 1884, as well as a recent period of mild and drizzly weather.
Hottest summer on record
The mean average temperature across June, July and August for the whole of the UK was 16.5C, beating the previous record of 16.1C set in 2025. For England alone, the mean average was 18.2C, comfortably ahead of the 17.4C seen last year.
The Met Office's five-day forecast predicts it will be "very warm on Sunday, then turning cooler for the coming days". It previously said temperatures could trend above average in September, particularly in southern regions, but "confidence decreases significantly" beyond the first week or so.
Unsettled pattern to continue
The forecaster added that forecasts "also highlight an ongoing unsettled pattern, with wetter-than-average weather likely to continue, particularly towards the north or northwest". Temperatures are expected to spike at around 4pm on Sunday.
The 14 areas facing 26C heat on Sunday are: London, Reading, Bristol, Oxford, St Albans, Cambridge, Northampton, Stratford upon Avon, Coventry, Huntingdon, Gloucester, Worcester, Ely and Peterborough.
