Gateacre School in Belle Vale, Liverpool, has been placed in lockdown this morning, Friday, September 4, after a communication containing a threat of violence was sent to schools across the city. The school activated its enhanced safety procedures in response to the threat.
School confirms pupils and staff are safe
In an email sent to parents and guardians this morning, the school assured them: "The school day has started safely, and all pupils and staff are safe." The message, shared with the ECHO, stated that the response is being coordinated with Liverpool City Council and Merseyside Police, and that the school is following the advice and guidance provided.
The email read: "You may or may not already be aware that a communication has been received containing a threat of violence towards schools across Liverpool. I want to reassure you that this is not being managed by Gateacre School in isolation. Our response is being coordinated with Liverpool City Council and Merseyside Police, and we are following the advice and guidance provided to us."
Lockdown procedures implemented as precaution
The school said it is implementing established lockdown and enhanced safeguarding procedures as a precaution, introduced in a calm and controlled manner to keep everyone onsite safe. Pupils are being supervised by staff, and the school is working to remain calm and orderly.
The email added: "At this time, there is no action that parents or carers need to take. We do, however, ask for your important cooperation. Please do not approach the school grounds, attempt to come onto the school site, or make arrangements to collect or make direct contact with your child/children unless we specifically contact you and ask you to do so as we are in lockdown. This is important in allowing us, the police and other agencies to maintain the safety."
Police and council contacted for comment
Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council have been approached for comment. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
