Liverpool's final post-5pm sunset of the autumn is approaching, with the sun currently setting at around 7.45pm. The days have been gradually shortening since the summer solstice on June 21, which marked the longest day of the year with the most sunlight.
Clocks fall back in October
At 2am on the last Sunday of October, October 25, the clocks will return to 1am. This change will bring lighter mornings but darker evenings. On October 25, the sun is predicted to set at around 4.53pm, more than an hour earlier than the previous day's predicted 5.55pm sunset.
The sun is expected to rise at 6.57am on October 25, compared with 7.55am on October 24.
Winter solstice and beyond
The winter solstice will take place on December 21, marking the day with the least sunlight and the official beginning of astronomical winter. On that day, the sun is predicted to rise at 8.25am in Liverpool before setting at 3.54pm.
Looking ahead to 2027, current predictions indicate Liverpool can expect its first post-5pm sunset of the year on February 5.
Some experts have called for the government to abolish the UK clock changes due to adverse effects on sleep. However, there are no plans to change the existing system.
