The Met Office has declared the end of the UK heatwave, with temperatures forecast to plummet by 19C, bringing relief from the extreme heat that disrupted the nation. The UK experienced its hottest June day on record for three consecutive days this week, peaking at 37.3C in Santon Downham, Suffolk, on Friday.
Temperature Drop Across the UK
Some areas will see temperatures as low as 18C on Saturday, a dramatic fall from the highs earlier in the week. London is expected to reach 21C, climbing to 26C later in the afternoon. In the West Midlands, temperatures will drop to 18C, a 19C decline from the week's peak. Glasgow will see 15C, while parts of Northern Ireland will be as low as 13C.
According to the Met Office, Sunday will be "much fresher" compared to recent days, with an amber weather warning for extreme heat still in place until 9am for parts of east and southeast England. The warning states that "hot and humid weather will continue" but with lower temperatures and humidity.
Forecast Details
The Met Office forecast for Saturday said: "Patchy outbreaks of rain in the west today, gradually moving east. Sunny spells elsewhere and feeling hot and humid again in eastern England. A fresher feel elsewhere with a gentle breeze." For the evening, they predicted: "Cloudy in northwest Scotland with outbreaks of rain. Drier elsewhere with clear spells. A much fresher night compared to recent days."
Although temperatures are dropping, the Met Office noted that overnight temperatures from Saturday into Sunday are unlikely to fall below the high teens Celsius, with some places not dropping below 20C. They added: "This will again be accompanied by high humidity at first, but fresher conditions will steadily become established from the west during the latter part of the night."
Impact and Outlook
The Met Office stated that another hot day is expected in the far east of the region on Sunday, but both temperatures and humidity will be lower than recent days, with a "much lower likelihood of further impacts." The end of the heatwave brings relief after a week of record-breaking heat, which caused disruption across the UK.
