Three people have died in a helicopter crash on the Greek island of Sifnos, according to local reports. The aircraft erupted into a fireball when it went down at around 6pm local time (4pm UK time) on Monday, August 17.
Victims and recovery
Local news reports say a British couple visiting the island on their honeymoon are among the dead. The third victim is reportedly an experienced military pilot and father of three.
After the flames were extinguished, the bodies of all three people were recovered from the wreckage, The Mirror reports. The fire department confirmed that three bodies were found once the fire was put out.
Crash details
The crash occurred near homes in the Tholos neighbourhood. The helicopter, operated by Bellavia Aviation Services, crashed just before it was due to land at Sifnos heliport.
Witnesses reported hearing a strange noise from the aircraft as it approached, according to Proto Thema. A photograph taken after the crash showed thick black smoke billowing from the fireball at the site.
