Passport Office Warns of Border Control Delays

HM Passport Office has issued an alert warning UK holidaymakers that they may face 'delays and issues at border control' this summer if their passport is not properly signed. The alert, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on July 13, 2026, reminds travellers that passports must be signed on the holder's signature line before travel.

Why Signing Your Passport Matters

According to the Passport Office, failure to sign a passport can lead to delays or problems at border control. The post states: 'Have you signed your passport? Passports must be signed on the holder's signature line before travel. Failure to do so may lead to delays or issues at border control.'

Most people over the age of 11 are required to sign their passport, unless they cannot sign due to a disability. In such cases, the passport will show 'the holder is not required to sign' on the page with the holder's name and photo.

How to Sign Correctly

The Passport Office advises using a black ballpoint pen and signing directly on the holder's signature line. Passports that require a signature are not valid without one. Travellers are urged to check their passport well before departure to ensure it is ready for travel.

Passport Costs and Renewal

Since changes earlier this year, a new or replacement British passport costs £102 when applying online, or £115.50 via a paper form. A child's passport costs £66.50 online or £80 using the paper form. The standard validity is 10 years for adults and five years for children.

The warning comes amid broader concerns about border delays, with some reports suggesting Brits could face long waits under new EU passport rules. The Passport Office advises checking the gov.uk website for the latest travel guidance.
