A 24-year-old man has died after getting into difficulty in the sea off the East Sussex coast. Emergency services were called to Camber Sands beach shortly before 7pm on Sunday following reports that three people had encountered trouble in the water.
Search and rescue operation
A major search operation was launched, with two of the three individuals—a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man—managing to reach safety. The third, a 24-year-old man, was recovered from the water at approximately 7.30pm.
Sussex Police said: "Sadly, despite lifesaving attempts by paramedics at the scene, he was pronounced deceased a short while later. His next of kin have been informed, and our thoughts are with them. Inquiries in the area remain ongoing and an increased emergency presence is visible at this time."
Coastguard response
A coastguard spokesman added: "At 6.37pm last night, HM Coastguard was called to an incident at Camber Sands, East Sussex. An HM Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter was sent, along with Pett Level lifeboat, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Rye Bay and Romney Marsh, Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service."
