A 28-year-old man was killed by a crocodile on Friday, June 26, at a popular beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The attack occurred outside the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa at around 6 p.m., according to Jalisco State Police.
Attack and Recovery
Police said evidence indicates the beachgoer was dragged out to sea by the reptile. Emergency services launched an overnight search and rescue operation on land and at sea. The victim's body was recovered Saturday morning, approximately 1,000 feet (300 meters) offshore.
The resort stated in a release to ABC News: "The safety and security of our guests and associates are our top priority. At the Marriott Puerto Vallarta we have appropriate signage, as well as night patrolling and red flags to indicate caution in the area and all were and are properly in place." The resort added that it reviews its plans and procedures often and works closely with authorities, with staff trained to respond to safety matters.
Wildlife Context
The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is native to Puerto Vallarta's coastal ecosystem. These reptiles frequently move between estuaries, canals, and beaches, including the Ameca River, El Salado Estuary, and Marina Vallarta canals. During the summer rainy season, which begins in June, rising water levels connect inland waters to the ocean, making it easier for crocodiles to reach tourist beaches.
Local authorities urged the public to heed warning signs and avoid entering water where wildlife is known to be present, particularly in estuary and mangrove areas. Jalisco State Civil Protection and local researchers advise against swimming at dawn, dusk, or after dark, when crocodiles are most active.
Related Incident
The attack follows a separate incident at Johnsons of Old Hurst in Cambridgeshire, UK, where a three-year-old boy was allegedly thrown into a crocodile enclosure on June 18. The attraction reopened on June 27 after closing out of respect. A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and released on bail.
