AA Warns Older Cars 'More Vulnerable' as 38C Heatwave Hits UK
AA: Older Cars 'More Vulnerable' in 38C UK Heatwave

The AA has warned that older cars and classic vehicles are 'more vulnerable' as a 38C heatwave continues to roast the UK. Temperatures are expected to hit 38C on Wednesday and Thursday, prompting the Met Office to issue a red extreme heat warning.

Why older cars are at risk

Vehicles can struggle in hot weather, leading to overheating engines, battery degradation and more. However, breakdown experts at the AA have highlighted that older cars and classics are particularly susceptible. They explained: 'Hot weather can put added strain on vehicles, particularly older cars, vans and those which have not been serviced recently. Cooling systems can come under more pressure in high temperatures, making it important to check coolant levels and look out for signs of overheating.'

Classic cars are often fitted with outdated cooling technology, making them less efficient than modern vehicles. High temperatures can accelerate the degradation of rubber hoses and belts, especially in older models.

Warning signs and advice

Classic car insurance specialists warn that tyres, fuel systems and interior trim can also be affected by searing heat. Common warning signs include a temperature gauge rising higher than normal, steam from the engine bay and reduced engine performance. Heritage Car Insurance explained: 'While most classics can comfortably cope with warm weather, prolonged periods of heat can expose weaknesses that may have gone unnoticed during cooler months. Older cooling systems, ageing rubber components and vehicles that spend much of the year in storage can all become more vulnerable when temperatures rise. The good news is that most heat-related issues are preventable.'

The specialists suggest parking in shaded areas, using a windscreen sunshade and keeping convertible roofs clean and protected. The AA also advises motorists relying on older vehicles to ensure they have suitable breakdown cover before travelling.
