12 injured as Spanish tourist bar collapses in La Rioja

Twelve people have been taken to hospital after both the floor and ceiling collapsed at a bar in Spain. Up to 50 people were at Bar Tempranillo in the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, La Rioja, when the building suddenly gave way.

Emergency response and casualties

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 5.25am this morning, where they pulled patrons from the rubble. The Guardia Civil confirmed six people had been transferred to the San Pedro hospital in Logroño, some 35 kilometres away, for treatment for a variety of injuries. Another two survivors were taken to the Haro health centre.

Rescue efforts and structural damage

Footage of the destroyed building showed the ceiling completely caved in, with the bar fittings and furniture smashed up. Firefighters are working to secure the venue and search for anyone who remains trapped inside. Spain’s Red Cross said it had dispatched two ambulances, two logistical support vehicles, and eight paramedics to assist survivors.

San Vicente de la Sonsierra is a medieval village on the River Ebro. A statement from the local authority said two buildings had collapsed. ‘Several individuals reported to the Emergency Coordination Center the partial collapse of two buildings located at numbers 8 and 10 Zumalacárregui Street, in the town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra’, a spokesperson said. ‘SOS Rioja mobilized firefighters from CEIS Rioja, the Civil Guard, emergency resources from the Rioja Health Service, the Red Cross, the Search and Rescue Dog Unit, a Civil Protection technician, and municipal services.’
