Spotify Premium Prices Rise in US: Key Details for UK Listeners
Spotify raises US subscription prices from February

Spotify has announced it will increase the monthly cost of its Premium subscriptions for users in the United States, marking its first price hike for the service there since 2024. The changes, confirmed by the company on Thursday 15 January 2026, will take effect from subscribers' February billing dates.

New Pricing Structure for US Subscribers

The streaming giant confirmed a series of adjustments across its subscription tiers. The standard individual plan will see a $1 increase, moving from $11.99 to $12.99 per month. Student subscriptions will also rise by $1, from $5.99 to $6.99.

Larger plans face a steeper rise. The Spotify Duo package for two users will increase by $2 to $18.99 monthly, while the Family plan jumps by the same amount to $21.99 per month.

In a statement, Spotify defended the move, saying: "Occasional updates to pricing across our markets reflect the value that Spotify delivers, enabling us to continue offering the best possible experience and benefit artists." The company confirmed affected subscribers would be notified directly by email.

Global Context and Company Performance

While this is the first US increase in two years, Spotify raised prices in several other regions during the autumn of 2025. The announcement coincided with positive financial news for the firm, which reported strong growth in late 2025.

Key figures showed monthly active users grew by 11% to 713 million, while the number of paying Premium subscribers climbed 12% to reach 281 million. Following the price announcement, Spotify's share price rose by approximately 3% in pre-market trading, according to Bloomberg data.

Recent Platform Innovations and Features

Founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Daniel Ek, Spotify has evolved into a global audio leader. The price adjustments come as the platform continues to roll out a suite of new features for Premium users, justifying its focus on "value."

Recent additions include a lossless audio tier, which streams CD-quality, uncompressed sound for a richer listening experience, though it requires manual activation in settings and consumes more data.

The platform has also enhanced social and discovery tools. A new Mix feature allows users to blend playlists with smooth, DJ-style transitions. Furthermore, Spotify expanded its integration with AI, partnering with ChatGPT in October 2025 to offer AI-powered music and podcast recommendations.

Other social features now show what friends are listening to in real-time and include a "Request to Jam" function for synced listening sessions. Group chats are slated for introduction in select markets soon.

Although the confirmed price changes currently apply only to the United States, Spotify advises users in all territories, including the UK, to check their local pricing via the official website for any updates.
